Functional Medicine Approach to Thyroid

 

Program Goals

This educational activity offers a functional medicine perspective on the clinical evaluation and management of the thyroid gland, with a focus on understanding why expanded thyroid lab panels are useful for proper patient care.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for medical professionals who have a clinical interest in thyroid disorders as seen in the following medical specialties: endocrinology, primary care (IM, FP, GP), obstetrics/gynecology, cardiology, pediatrics, laboratory medicine, nuclear medicine, ophthalmology, neurology, psychiatry, and sleep medicine.

Educational Objectives

After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Describe the advancements in functional medicine related to the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease.
  • Discuss the use of laboratory tests as used by functional medicine healthcare providers.
  • Explain healthcare provider approaches to recognizing subclinical manifestations of hypothyroidism.
  • Recognize the importance of cooperation between functional medicine providers and endocrinology specialists in the treatment of patients with thyroid disease.

ABIM MOC: Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to: 1.25 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

Non-physician Attendance: A certificate of participation will be provided to other health care professionals requesting credits. Participants should ensure in advance that their credentialing or licensing organization accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Term Offering

This activity was released on May 15, 2025 and is valid for one year. Requests for credit must be made no later than May 15, 2026

Instructions to Receive Credit

In order to receive credit, participants must complete the course, score at least a 70% on the post test, complete the course evaluation form, and submit a credit application. Successful applicants will be able to download their certificate upon completion of these requirements. A copy of the certificate will also be sent to the email address provided in the credit application.
